…sitting by the fire, under the weight of the stars, listening to the sounds of the African night—will always be the heart of it. It is so utterly primal you become subliminally aware of deeper rhythms and unsuspected harmonies; you're overcome by a sense of profound contentment and the mysterious rightness of things, and it is addictive: Once the spell has been cast, you have a nagging need to return. Indeed, the French have a rather poetic expression for this longing: Le Mal D'Afrique, The African Sickness.
